Itanhanga Golf Club in Rio de Janeiro

The Itanhanga Golf Club is one of the best golf courses in Brazil. Even chosen as a favourite by President Getulio Vargas, who played golf there in the 30s. According to the American magazine Golf Digest, it ranks amongst the hundred best courses worldwide outside the USA. It is also the only golf club with 27 holes in Rio de Janeiro State. The golf club location is very well in an up-market suburb of Barra da Tijuca. Because of being one of the fastest-growing neighbourhoods in the city. Especially, from the golf club, you have a fantastic view of Tijuca Forest and Pedra da Gavea. Probably two of the most beautiful postcard views of Rio de Janeiro. Itanhanga is very famous for its Golf School, which actively promotes junior golf.

The Itanhanga Golf Course

The design of the Itanhanga golf course is by the Canadian architect Stanley Thompson and his young American associate Robert Trent Jones. The Rio de Janeiro 500 Years Open in 2000 was held at Itanhanga. The first of two European PGA Tour events held in the country. Roger Chapman won the event when he overcame Padraig Harrington in a playoff. But the Irishman would go on to win the other commemorative competition at Sao Paulo a week later. Not to be outdone by the male professionals. Therefore the LPGA organized the 36-hole Brasil Cup at Itanhanga in 2009.
